The Catalan Family Foundation was founded on 24 December 1986 before the notary of Barcelona Antonio-Carmelo Agustín Torres, under protocol number 7272. In virtue of the Order of the Ministry for Justice of 14 April 1987, the organisation was registered on the Register of Foundations of the Generalitat de Catalunya under number 303.

The Catalan Family Foundation is behind the Fert baccalaureate, which is based on the traditions of the former COU Fert, a school specialised in baccalaureate education. COU Fert was founded in 1972.

FERT (Family Association for Education and Tutor Relations) was founded in 1968, and was constituted as an Association in 1973 before being declared a public body in 1977. The Catalan Family Foundation is a member of FERT.

The Foundation is also a key backer of the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, which was officially established by Law 11/1997 of 1 October, as published publicly in DOGC no. 2487.
